Association of Societies for Growing Australian Plants (ASGAP) Seminar
This seminar is held every two years in a different state. In 2009 it will
be Victoria’s turn to host the event. Open to both APS members
and the general public, the 2009 seminar will be held from 26th September -
5th October 2009 in Geelong.
The theme of the seminar is "Australian Plants in the 21st Century". We hope
to enthuse, enlighten, enthral and thoroughly enjoy immersing all who attend
in a real “love” session of our favourite pastime, hobby livelihood, way of
life or whatever you feel about our Australian plants.
The venue for the seminar talks is Costa Hall, Deakin University on the Waterfront, right in the heart of Geelong. It has excellent acoustics and comfortable seating.
There will be three days of talks which will revolve around daily themes.
The three days of talks will be interspersed with day tours to the Otway
Ranges and the Royal Botanic Gardens at Cranbourne. There will also be pre
and post seminar tours to the Wimmera and Grampians, along the Great Ocean
Road to Warrnambool and the Lower Glenelg River forests areas, and to areas
east of Melbourne including Wilsons Promontory. On these tours there will be
guides to help you discover the beauty of our Australian plants and enjoy
the scenery which Victoria offers.
The guest speakers have been chosen for their knowledge, personality,
ability to communicate and entertain. They will cover many interesting
topics which we are not likely to hear about in normal circumstances. Most
topics will be supported by digital photography.
Accommodation
Accommodation will be available for a limited number of people at Marcus Oldham College.
Geelong will be hosting several other activities at the same time as the ASGAP Seminar, so accommodation across the city will be at a premium and we urge you to book as early as possible.

Victoria - The Garden State
Victoria is known as The Garden State. The third smallest State, we believe
we have it all. Less than 3% of the continent, Victoria has approximately
4000 recorded species of native plants found within vegetation types ranging
from sub tropical areas to Mallee. What is really great is that many of
these types of vegetation can be found within a few hours travel from
Geelong.
Hand in hand with the vegetation types are the varying rocks, soils
and climate types which support a wide diversity of flora. Our Victorian
members enjoy wonderful growing conditions for a wide variety of native
plants and we enjoy the challenge of growing in our garden plants from all
over Australia. Many of our members are also dedicated to growing local
indigenous flora of their own regions. What we have learnt is Australian
native plants are truly adaptable to a wide range of soils and climates. So
why not come along to the seminar and find out more about our unique flora
and advances being made in cultivation of them.
